Avalanches in Italian Alps kill seven

A series of avalanches in the Italian Alps has killed seven people, emergency services said.

Four of those who died were rescuers searching for two tourists killed by an earlier avalanche in the Trentino region of northern Italy.

Another avalanche killed a 12-year-old German boy skiing in the same area.

The head of Italy’s civil protection service, Guido Bertolaso, said rescuers were dying because people were ignoring warnings about conditions.

The two tourists, from Udine, northern Italy, went missing on Saturday afternoon. Relatives said they were both experienced and careful skiers.

he 14-car train was traveling from the northern city of La Spezia to Pisa when a rear car plowed into a residential neighborhood beside the train station in the Tuscan seaside town of Viareggio just before midnight Monday.

A train car filled with liquefied natural gas exploded, collapsing five buildings and setting fire to a vast area. Homes collapsed or burned, killing residents as they slept.

The exact death toll was unclear as hundreds of rescuers searched through the rubble for survivors.

The court also ordered Germany to pay damages to some of the families of the hundreds of victims, the ANSA news agency reported.

The nine suspects, aged between 84 and 90 were tried in absentia and found guilty of the murders of more than 350 civilians in the summer of 1944.

A tenth defendant was acquitted and another died during the trial, the agency said.

The victims, including many women and children, were rounded up by Nazi troops ostensibly on the hunt for partisans and shot in separate killings that occurred in the area around the Tuscan town of Fivizzano in August, 1944.
